Hearths and Slips

Hearths are used on the floor and in front of the fireplaces to protect the room’s flooring material from heat, sparks and embers.  Today, most Building Codes require an 18 inch hearth in front of the fireplace, especially in rooms with wood or carpet.  A hearth is typically not necessary if the fireplace surround is placed on tile or stone floors.

Hearths offer an aesthetically pleasing look and in many cases complete the overall appearance of a fireplace.  Hearths can be installed flush with the existing flooring or raised a half-inch to 12 inches, or made bench height to accommodate seating.

Cast Stone Elements provides matching hearth slips with every fireplace surround order.  We will hand-make enough slips to create an 18 inch hearth, the same length as your fireplace mantel.  There is no additional charge for these slips.  Our design team will help determine the exact number of slips you’ll need for each of your fireplace surround orders.

  CH9    18” wide, 9” thick with a French edge, up to 8 feet in length
  $130 per linear ft.

3” to 9” Hearths are made using a one-piece top with an applied French edge molding (C-20), and .75” slips on the sides.

Hearths higher than 9 inches require framing with a plywood finish.  Cast Stone Elements offers Hearth tops for any custom sized hearth using any of our square or rectangle table top edges for $54 per square foot.  Slips can be used to clad the sides of the framed hearth.

Slips

Slips are 12” by 24” or 24” by 24” and ¾ inch thick cast stone tiles, handmade to match your fireplace surround.  They are used to fill in the space between the firebox opening and the surround.  They can also be used for a hearth (see hearths) if you want a hearth that is flush with carpet or wood flooring.

Cast Stone Elements provides matching slips with every fireplace surround order.  We will hand-make enough slips to fill in the space between the firebox and surround, and enough slips to use as a hearth.  There is no additional charge for these slips.  Our design team will help determine the exact number of slips you’ll need for each of your fireplace surround orders.

Slips may also be used to clad the wall behind the fireplace.
